The rectory of Our Lady of Fandom, Wednesday evening

So. Castiel had a girl's phone number. She seemed to be very nice, and quite wise in the ways of modern technology, entertainment, and apparel. She had promised to teach him how to dance.

Now he just had to figure out what he was supposed to do with said phone number. Was there some sort of etiquette in place here that as a human he would be aware of? What was his own phone number, just in case he had to leave her a message, as she'd said? Was it bad that he didn't actually know her name?

So many questions. He could think of only two people who might have the patience to answer them. He knew Chuck had business going on in New York which he was perhaps better off not interrupting, so that left Dean.

He looked over the little piece of paper with her number on it as he dialed, wondering if there was some deeper, esoteric meaning to the numbers, or the manner in which they'd been conveyed.

People were so difficult.

Castiel was silent for a moment.

"I don't have a weapon."

Dean rolled his eyes. "Dude, figure of speech."

"Oh." People had so many of those. He didn't know how they kept track. "I have a woman's phone number."

"What woman?"

Er.

"She works in one of the shops in town. She wants to teach me how to dance."

"Like a date?" Dean smiled slowly.

"That would be one of my questions, yes."

"Is she charging you for dance lessons?"

[scruffnfeathers]

"We didn't discuss any formal terms," Castiel said. "She asked if I liked dancing and I said I'd never done it and she said she could show me and asked if I wanted her number." He thought back. "Also, she was concerned with the functionality of her shoes and wanted to know my opinion on leggings."

Yeah that sounded more like a pick up than an attempt to solicit business. "Do you have an opinion on leggings?" Dean wondered curiously.

"I told her I'd never thought about them. That seemed to be the right answer."

"Better than 'those leggings make your butt look big,'" Dean told him.

"Oh no, her butt was quite nicely shaped." You know, for a human. "I'm not certain when to call. She said 'any time', but then said not before noon, and I'm not sure if that means right now."

Dean considered. "Might be a bit on the late side, though it sounds like she's a nightowl with the not before noon thing."

"No, she's definitely human." Castiel paused. "That was another figure of speech, wasn't it?"

"It was. Means she likes nights better than mornings," Dean defined. "You could probably call her now, considering that. What were you planning on saying?"

". . . I have no idea." See, this is why it's good that he called Dean. "We didn't even exchange names."

Dean totally would have facepalmed if he hadn't been holding a bag of food in one hand, a tray of drinks in the other while still managing to talk on the phone. "Okay, kinda a big lapse but not necessarily a deal breaker." There were enough times he'd picked up a girl while using an alias that sometimes even Dean couldn't remember his own name. "But it does give you somewhere to start. You can tell her that you were so captivated by her that you forgot to introduce yourself. And then tell her your name." Pause. "You might want to leave off the Angel of the Lord part."

"I thought I was supposed to 'be myself'."

"Well yeah, but that doesn't mean you have to be all sharey," Dean said. "I don't generally introduce myself saying, 'Hi, I'm Dean Winchester and I hunt ghosts and demons for a living.'" Okay maybe once or twice in Fandom... "Tell her your name and that you run the church. You can even say you have a close personal relationship with God. Just save the angel thing for a little bit after you find out what her name is."

"You don't think that will make me seem . . . dishonest?"

"It would only make you dishonest if you said, 'Hi I'm Castiel and I'm definitely not an Angel of the Lord,'" Dean said. "No one expects you to lay out every little detail about yourself on the first date." He grinned. "It takes the mystery out of things."

"There is great mystery in the divine," Castiel acknowledged.

He'd always just sucked at that part.

"Very well. What is my goal with this phone call?"

"Well, a) to find out her name. And b) try setting up one of these dance lessons she suggested. Then call me back and let me know what the details are and I can help you figure out for sure if she wants to dance or y'know dance." Dean's suggestive leer was present in his voice but whether it registered to the angel, he wasn't sure about, so he added, "Like in sex."

"Another figure of speech." Castiel nodded, though Dean couldn't see it. "I think this may take some . . . preparation."
